How to transfer a domain from 1and1 webhosting

WHT member netscan posts a short but sweet how to on transfering a domain from 1and1 webhosting:

just unlock the domain from the control panel, then go to cancel.1and1.com and cancel the domain you wish to transfer, choose the change of registrar option.

Then, request the domain from your new registrar, once the domain has been acked, go back to your 1and1 control panel and authorize the transfer of the domain.

Follow these steps and the change will be quick and painless.

Then once you have authorized the transfer from the 1and1 control panel, you can cancel the package. For the fastest results, go to the FAQ’s and search for “cancel package”, then print out the form that’s in there. The cancellation will go A LOT faster that way.

I’ve heard real horror stories about companies losing domain names after closing accounts and hosts not responding to transfer requests - and also that if they do respond, they’ll charge a steep fee just for doing so.

1and1 can be especially bad on support issues, so I sincerely hope netscan is right about the simple way.

  2. 1and1 are especially obvious about their not wanting transfers away. There are no references on their site as to how to go about the process and their support is a non-event. Hopeless doesn’t even cover their description. Steer clear unless you can guarantee that you will never need support.

  3. Actually, if you type “cancel domain” in their help search engine, you get very clear instructions.
