Jail for the poor, not for the rich

It’s depressing to see that our legal system ultimately reserves prison for the poor, while the rich can get away with most anything except violent crimes without anything more than a slap on the wrist.

Remember the recent London Riots? Terrible stuff. Damage estimated to be around £200 million.

And then I read this on the BBC website: Tax deal with Swiss banks agreed by UK authorities.

An innocuous seeming headline, except for the following: “The deal could see between £3bn and £6bn a year being handed to HMRC by the Swiss authorities.”

The gist? Those who have been evading tax in the UK will not be prosecutd. Instead they will simply have to start paying normal tax rates. In a few years.

In the meantime, these people have been ripping off the British public to the tune of £3-6 billion a year.

Suddenly the London rioters seem like small time petty crooks. Yet the government has been pushing on handing out the longest sentences possible to these people.

Surely it’s the rich who have caused billions in losses every year are the bigger criminals?
