Windows XP - anyone seeing weird behaviour past few days?

Anyone else had any problems the past few days with Windows XP programs?

McAfee crashed a couple of days ago on an update, and after the PC restarted McAfee wouldn’t load up.

I contacted McAfee, where a technician told me it was a known conflict with Zonealarm.

I unstalled Zonealarm, uninstalled/reinstalled McAfee and it worked fine again.

However, WS_FTP Pro has also stopped working - just will not connect, just hangs.

Uninstalled, reinstalled WS_FTP Pro - no change.

Uninstalled McAfee in case of a wider conflict and reinstalled WS_FTP Pro and still no change.

Just downloaded and installed Cute FTP - again, doesn’t connect, just hangs.

Windows XP Firewall is off so nothing should be blocking FTP connections.

So either an update to Windows or McAfee has suddenly caused a software conflict - or else my PC is buggered and needs a full clean out.

I can’t find any chatter to suggest third-party software is actually at fault, but I’m not keen to rush into a reformat.

Anyone seen or heard anything?

  1. I can’t say I have, but your choice in programs might be contributing.

    My choices:

    Replace McAfee with AVG
    Replace WS_FTP with FlashFXP
Replace ZoneAlarm with Kerio Personal Firewall (try to find version 2.x. It totally beats the newest version)

Whatever the case may be, it sounds kind of bad. Might be some registry setting that is corrupt that relates to an application. My mind is saying “reformat” which might save you the hassle of trying out 3 new apps.

    Good luck.

  2. Could well be right about software choices - I figure if I’m using the same choices after a few years because it’s a habit, the choices aren’t necessarily the best. :)

  3. I have the same problem. I cannot connect using ms-dos http://ftp.exe nor with ws_ftp, while this used to work fine.
I my case I did not notice a Mcafee crash, and it also loads up just fine.

The problem IS however related to the Mcafee firewall, because when i switch to the XP firewall, the ftp traffic is allowed.

The strange thing is that Mcafee does allow me to do ftp connect using the windows explorer.

  4. Managed to get WS_FTP working again, by uninstalling/reinstalling McAfee a couple of times. :)

  5. About the same time as your problem I also had a variety of problems, some of which are continuing. Unfortunately I didn’t keep a log of times and dates. XP ran an upgrade/fix and McAfee ran a main upgrade about the same time. My internet access slowed to a crawl (belying the 2mb download test time)and my e-mail download also slowed to a crawl. The internet problem was site variable - HSBC Bank main page loaded normally but First Direct Bank main page took several minutes. After talking to my ISP I turned off all the McAfee features and brought them back one at a time. the phishing screen was the internet culprit. E-mail problems continue. Even the smallest e-mail takes at least a minute to download. I have tried altering settings and switching from Outlook Express to Outlook but all to no avail. Sending emails is no problem. Any bright ideas?

  6. It appears for myself at least that McAfee was having a problem with Zonealarm running. Zonealarm did a really dumb thing and tried to radically expand the features of their free firewall to include spam filtering and anti-phishing, causing a major overlap with McAfee.

In the end, uninstalling Zonealarm and then uninstalling/reinstalling McAfee eventually solved the issue, but was really annoying.

What’s weird is that I set up Zonealarm and McAfee on my girlfriend’s PC and that’s running fine. Go figure.

Anyway, hope you get your own situation resolved.

  7. On XP about a month ago I had huge “not responding” delays start in SeaMonkey mail compose [address completion] functions, ongoing to date. Just installed WS_FTP 2007 Home yesterday. Right away I started having consistent repeatable episodes where when I’m away for a few minutes, I come back to a dead black screen, non-responsive to mouse or keyboard, and it can’t be re-booted, but has to be powered down awhile and then re-started. I ran version 2006 WS_FTP OK except for numerous failed transfers and hangs. It is possible that a Windows Update caused this because I just got I.E. 7 to stop hanging.
I am VERY close to buying a Mac and would appreciate any comments.

  9. I have just started, myself, having a problem with both McAfee Update and WS_FTP being able to successfully connect to McAfee/NAI’s FTP site for updates. No problem, with WS_FTP connecting to any other FTP sites.

Did McAfee/NAI change something with the FTP site?
