Now over 200,000 spam comments
Akismet now lists over 215,000 spam comments targeted and deleted at ibrian.co.uk.
I think that says something sad about humanity - that as a species we seek to predate on one another for material advantage.
The internet is such an accurate reflection of the web - the hard working projects that seek to give, the spammers and scammers who seek to take; the mediocrity and banality, the insight and humility; the empowerment of the individual to tap into the world, and the enfranchisement of the predator looking to exploit it.
If ever anyone says that there’s something wrong with the internet, just tell them it’s a reflection of humanity, nothing more.
In the meantime, I have 200,000+ spam comments that show the negative side, and an interfaith charity to set up next year.

:) .. on the brighter side it means your sites getting popular… I remember the day when my spam count crossed double digit.. was honestly a proud moment… though I don’t quite share the same sentiment these days…lol

I just have enough visibility for the spam crawlers to find me. :)
And thanks one aggressive spammer, I got pushed through my bandwidth limit yesterday. Ouch.

Nice post, well-written and couldn’t agree more. I’ve found Akismet and excellent tool and then discovered spammers were finding a way around that, so added the maths question too.

Should this threshold deserve a reward? Or just a big thank you to the Akismet creators!

This is what I’ve been thinking a lot lately. There’s loads of great resources on the net that are genuinely informative but most people will use things like social networks and blogs just to see what they can suck dry out of it, without giving anything back.
eventually these types will realise that if it’s all for monetisation reasons then they will be poorly mistaken! The internet is a (mostly )free information source and like with anything, unless you put hard work in, you will get nothing out of it, no matter how much link spamming you do.

What did I do before tending to the huge amounts of spam! The number of get-rich-quick or inheritance scams is now becoming a pain. Even with good filtering, there are still some getting through.
Maybe the penalties should be increased for spammers, as I see no let up whilst the rewards are higher than the punishment. Ok, missed out the spammers who do it for kicks, rather than commercial gain, but same applies.
