Observations on Google’s Allegra update

Interesting to see the changes still going on.

I mentioned before that a Uni site was ranking high for the search term “internet marketing” on UK searches of Google UK. That is now dropping and instead an Amazon page for internet marketing books has risen to sixth.

The SERPs have really mixed over the past couple of weeks - however, excepting for a small initial fall, my business site has continued to rank well there.

Because of the Uni and Amazon link being high, it’s hard not to infer from this that Google may be increasing the influence of “authority” sites.

There is also a good chance that Google are trying to punish anchor text that fails to be varied enough - this would be a good way to confound sitewide advertising on a small scale, and also the DigitalPoint co-op network.

Personal thought - work on increasing variety of text anchors for sites and pages.

  2. Hi Howell -

Google has been making changes since February, and these seem to have been occuring right through March as well.

So it seems that your site may have been impacted by a very specific modification around that date.

Was it all just Google traffic affected, so far as you know?
