IPTV will revolutionise the internet

I’ve written up a major article on the main site, outlining my vision of how IPTV will revolutionise the internet: The New Digital Revolution.

I don’t make that statement lightly - I’ve been telling media student friends for the past year about how IPTV will create a major distribution channel for independent media production.

To summarise:

[IPTV] will destroy the distinction between consumers and suppliers, as consumers create and distribute their own entertainment.

Through the power and accessibility of digital technology coupled with the internet as a distribution platform, today’s websites are the independent media platforms of the future.

We’ve already seen digital media become more accessible on the internet - people in the movie industry themselves led the way with productions such as TROOPS - a Star Wars spoof of US hit show COPS.

Now the fans are claiming the internet as a platform for media production.

The most recent high-class production I’ve seen is Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning - you can see by the trailer here how seriously accessible top-grade special effects have become.

For my own part, I’ve already made a promise in Jan 2005 that I plan to deliver some form of media production to the chronicles network within 5 years.

What form it takes will depend upon budget, skills availability, and team organisation.

I have two key low-budget ideas in mind - one a science fiction, another as historical fiction fantasy.

The second one may be more likely - last year I joined Clan Ranald, a professional mediaeval combat group.

Not only have they had roles in the Hollywood movies Gladiator, Braveheart, and King Arthur, but they’re already in in the advanced stages of building a reconstruction motte-and-bailey castle - with village - on National Forestry land a few miles away.

That means I could already get an experienced cast and settings. All I’d need is commited film students, a good script, and some cash to inject into it - all of which are accessible.

The IPTV revolution is something I saw coming years ago. When it arrives, I intend to be an active part of it.
