Having fun with MySpace

Finally joined MySpace last night, and already spent the day addicted to signing up new friends.

Started with zero, found about 6 from my forums who were already members, and then spent the day chasing up keywords and sending friend requests.

So far got around 43 friends. :)

There are a number of addictive elements - firstly, in trying to set up a profile that someway projects a sense of your self that works - all with the knowledge that you are directly connected in to potentially millions of people.

Then, of course, there’s the marketing addiction of trying to increase your social network.

It’s so easy to reach people - already contacted a couple I planned to interview for chronicles, and had no problem in getting them to add me to their friends.

Noticed the site does seem to break a lot - pages failing to load, technical errors, and currently the “add to friends” link isn’t working for me.

I can’t help but think of Orkut, and how MySpace offers everything that Google got wrong with it - the openess, the features, and the functionality (when running) is so much superior on MySpace than Orkut.

Still, I’m sure I’ll soon get bored of playing with social networking, but for the time being, it’s an unhealthy distraction from work (or is that research?), so I’ll have to make sure that I’m much more disciplined than I have been with it - friend invites on a more measured pace.

Anyway, if anyone reading this uses MySpace, feel free to Add Me. :)
