Sometimes I just hate webdev work - part 2!!

Dealing with errors in Platinax is proving child’s play at present compared to a recent client site I’m redeveloping.

So far it’s a catalogue of miscommunications and misjudgements as I take a site built with .inc files in .asp to php includes in a Wordpress CMS.

I have never wanted to abandon any project as much as this - tonight, I thought for a moment about just apologising, refunding his cash, and getting rid.

It’s not even a big-paying job - which makes it worse. There’s no sense of reward to be gained in material terms.

Trouble is, I figure I took on the work, and I have to finish it - and I have *never* been so pushed on a project as this.

I’ve really had to take periodic time-out moments to figure out a major hurdle - but luckily, figure out a solution.

I’ve had to acquaint myself with a few new Wordpress plugins - not all of which have worked - but a couple I’m so far grateful for include:

1. Text Control

I found that for some insane reason the Wordpress install was inserting
tags in all the WP templates. As the site being lifted is currently in tables, those breaks can make an utter mess of everything, from spacing to javscript being crippled.

I’ve found this useful - though the Textile 2 option actually made things worse - all punctuation rendered into HTML code. However, I found selecting “no formating” worked great.

2. The Excerpt Reloaded

Another potential lifesaver, I’m using runPHP but in the awkward situation of all my php-driven content being in the Wordpress posts, rather than the template.

This could be a potential lifesaver, if I’m allowed to exclude the php tags from being stripped out.

Anyway, there is so an article coming on Platinax about webdev nightmares.

Key is that if the webdev takes on work that he has trouble with, not least through miscommunications and misjudgements, then it’s the webdev’s *fault* for not being clear on the issues in the first place.

You see, it’s an issue of *responsibility* - if you allow yourself to get into such a mess, it’s up to you to get you - and your client - out of it.

In the meantime, I was up late working on this last night and tonight, and will have to get back onto it first thing tomorrow.

And that’s why sometimes I just hate webdev work. :)
