Sony Vaio VGN-FS115S

So, with some travelling coming up, not least the Threadwatch meet at Stansted, and SES in London, I needed a labtop. As I also want to use it as a back-up PC, after the horrible incident of my main PC failing on New Years day, that meant I’d have to go for a fairly good machine.

I figured on a budget of around £1,000 and visited PC World, who for some reason don’t seem so evil at the moment.

Anyway, there was a number of labtops around - none of which stood out - except for on one of the showcase stands was a VAIO which somehow looked nice and sleek.

I’d nearly bought a Sony Vaio internet TV PC to replace the old one, but there was too much focus on sleekness and media, and not enough on compenents, room for upgrades - or even USB ports.

Any, today I bought the laptop - Sony Vaio FS VGN-FS115S (who said catchy titles are dead), with a 1.73 Intel Centrino processor, 512 RAM, an 80 GB harddrive, and a widescreen black LCD double lamp screen (apparently that’s good).

I’ll be transferring some key business files to ensure good redundancy for business purposes, though leaving anything with passwords on away in case of theft.

The machine looks sleek and good quality so far, and I’ll provide some feedback on how it handles later on.

If anyone cares. :)

  2. Hi Jayesh -

I’m not sure what the actual wireless network protocol is that it uses - but to switch the wireless networking card on/off there’s a little sliding button on the front edge of the laptop, just to the right.

Try clicking that on/off and see if that helps.

I actually did have problems with the wireless networking not working and even took it back to PC World. It eventually worked, though it looks as if when you make the on/off changes, you then have to reboot the machine after to implement them.

I’ve not yet set up a wireless network - my new Advent desktop seems to not want to wireless network, so I need to get that sorted out first.

Let me know how it goes for you if you can. :)

  3. Hi, I also bought this laptop. Do either of you have a recovery disc I could borrow?

    Many thanks in advance.

  4. I’ve got one, but it’s a pretty old model - no idea if it would be properly suitable I’m afraid.

Also, never had problems getting set up with the wireless network. :)

  5. People shouldnt be as skeptical as they are when it comes to technological advances. I mean, if we have been shooting man to space for over 30 years, im sure we can conjure up something as simple as viewing TV on your PC.
People got to stop being so high-strung! Informative article i must say!
