Sometimes I just hate webdev work!
Anyone with a home PC probably knows how infuriating computers can be at the best of times.
When you do webdevelopment work, you’re not simply working with ordinary desktop computers - you’re also working with servers and the whole HTTP she-bang.
And it is all *very* unforgiving, in that unforgiving computer logic sort of way.
Take last night - figured I’d move the Articles/Reviews/Interviews sections on Platinax to a new all-encompassing section - the Platinax Business Blog.
I made a single error - I updated the database before updating the blog URL.
Result - the Articles/Reviews/Interviews sections all redirected to the homepage, along with the rest of the Platinax main pages (about, etc), and a complete rewrite of the mod_rewrite rules which also redirected all of the directory pages.
In other words, a complete balls up.
Didn’t realise my error until this evening, so I’ve now had to dedicate a Sunday night, 2 weeks before Christmas, to repairing all the bloody damage.
Still, it’s forced my hand - my original blog at Platinax has now been rebuilt here, and the new Platinax blog has also been built.
But, my, what a complete pain in the arse.
All it took was a single instance of inattention to detail, and a revenue generating website effectively crippled.
And that’s why sometimes I just hate webdev work! :)
