eyeOS a threat to Google and Microsoft?

I’ve already mentioned before that Google is trying to turn the internet into a customised OS - and that this directly competes with Microsoft’s attempt to focus on remote file hosting.

It seems the future is already laid out - allow internet users to remotely host files online and wall them off in a suite of applications that tie them to the corporation.

However, eyeOS could be a surprise mover in this scenario.

It’s a web operating system. It’s a web office.

And it’s Open Source.

The last point really needs bolding, because so much in the general internet community is run via open source applications - everything from Apache to Linux to PHP and MySQL.

Netcraft makes it plain that Windows is the choice of corporations, but for the smaller companies, open source has the power.

And then you have all those general applications for the internet that are powered by open source applications - usually running on a PHP/MySQL platform. Wordpress, vbulletin, drupal, and so on.

So imagine what would happen if eyeOS found itself a major backer - someone would could not simply accelerate the development of the eyeOS project, but also build a comprehensive range of applications on it?

Applications that could be promoted for general use - outside of the data-mining machines of Google and Microsoft?

Then wouldn’t we really have a more free, secure, and private internet?

Maybe eyeOS is still a mouse on the market - but it remains a fledgling market. A market formative enough to break from the grip of billion-dollar corporations if the mouse roars.

  1. I totally agree with you. We are running eyeOS at Nigeria.MySpace (http://www.nigeria.ms) for Nigerians in Nigeria and I believe this type of OS is well suited for places like Nigeria, where owning a PC is still every expensive for the masses.

With applications like these, we are giving every one a chance to own their very own desktop - virtually anyway.

A big thank you to the eyeOs community.
