Taking pride in clients
I know a lot of SEO people have gravitated away from having clients to running their own sphere of businesses.
I have to admit, though - I do like working with people, and I do like working with my clients. I feel a real sense of joy when we set targets and succeed in meeting them.
I guess it helps that my clients are general SME’s - hardworking people with real long-term small businesses, trying to grow bigger.
One of my bigger clients had a bespoke ecommerce site built years ago - then the developer decided to drop his design/development business and set up as a competitor.
The site he’d been left with was - well, to put it most kindly - and out of date mess.
I was able to make the site search engine friendly and apply a mod_rewrite solution, but the entire site badly needed redesigning and redeveloping.
Unfortunately, I simply do not have the skills to do that, and despite making some enquiries, I couldn’t find a developer who could apply what the client needed. Too often the developers wanted things done that benefited them, rather than the client.
Luckily, he’s in the process of getting the new site developed, and it looks brilliant.
Firstly, it has a great overall design and look - very sleek and well presented.
Secondly, though, is that as we’re now developing the site presence on a linux/php platform, I can apply new features to the site to increase it’s overall web presence.
These include:
- a blog - for PR and promotional purposes
- a forum - for support and community building
- a news service - to place the site as a market leader
Personally, I can’t wait to see how everything gels for the long term.
And with that, I’m genuinely glad to be a part of what’s coming.
